Why do we make decisions?

A decision is a choice. And decisions and choices are what shape our future. When you decide to do something you are making a choice to move in one direction over another.

All of these decisions are choices that would direct your life in a very different way than if you didn’t make them at all.

How do you currently make a decision?

Most people don’t think about how they make decisions. However, I would stress to pay attention to your decision-making abilities because any action that determines your future is worth a second (or third) thought.

When you aren’t conscious of the decisions you are making – you fall into the category of those that “go with the flow”… or worse – you let your emotions make your decisions for you.

Have you ever wanted to get healthy and then when workout time came you decided to stay at home instead of hit the gym? That’s you prioritizing your emotions over your goals. When you don’t know what you want in the longer term – your decisions will be made in the short term and how you want to feel. Make sense?

I spent years “going with the flow” and hostage to my emotions until I found myself unable to make decisions at all – I was frozen.

I couldn’t make them at restaurants, in my business, with my friends, in my relationships… It didn’t matter what it was, I just couldn’t make them. I realized that my external world had more control over my life than I did – and needed to make a change.

That’s when I decided I needed to create a system to help me make decisions (how’s that for overthinking?) 😏 – and should you have the same problem I once did, I want to share it with you here:

How to make decisions with impact:

Most people make decisions without knowing what they want in the long term. If all decisions lead to an outcome – it made sense that to make a decision I could believe in and get behind, I had to know what that outcome was after.

  1. Outcome / Result: If you don’t know what you want or where you want to go… your decision will be based on your emotions. Get clear on what your goal is. Create your North Star. My problem I was continuously making decisions based on how I was feeling in the moment.
  2. Why / Purpose: To get grounded and focused, it’s important to remind yourself why this result is important to you. Often we can create surface level goals without asking the right questions to get better clarity or deepen the connection to what we want. Why is this important to you?
  3. Possible Solutions: Here is where you get to put that indecisiveness to work. Make a list of all those possibilities that are floating around in your head. Get them out. ALL OF THEM. These are all the directions you could go.
*** When you brain dump the crap in your head you give yourself a chance to BREATH. If it’s a “bad idea” I still want you to write it down (btw there is no such thing as a bad idea).
  4. Decide / Action: Once you have all your ideas out on the paper reconnect to your intention and why.
    • What do you want?
    • Why is it important to you?
Highlight the top 3 – 5 decisions that are the most likely to produce your result. And notice how I said likely to produce and not the most comfortable? Then DO THEM. The biggest pitfall most people make is one they make a decision they don’t take action on them. If you want to result. You need to take action.

Learning how to make decisions geared toward your goals and desires is a skill that nobody teaches you. But if your life is a result of every decision you make… It would be a valuable lesson to learn.

Understanding yourself and who you are is the first step into becoming who you were meant to be. My specialty is working with individuals to access the parts of themselves that will allow them to succeed at everything they want in life, while stripping away the patterns that hold them back.
